A New Double-Layer Switched Reluctance Motor with a Low Torque Ripple

In this study, a novel double-layer switched reluctance motor (DLSRM) is proposed. Firstly, the motor topology is studied and a simple magnetic circuit model is presented. To obtain the magnetic performance of the DLSRM, 3-D finite element analysis is adopted. The magnetic flux lines and flux density distributions of one layer of the machine are plotted. Then, the torque and flux linkage profiles of the machine are achieved. The steady-state operation of the machine is illustrated with both current chopping control (CCC) and single pulse control (SPC). In light of this, the voltage, flux linkage, current, and torque waveforms are derived. To prove the superiority of the DLSRM, a single-layer SRM (SLSRM) is considered with the same dimensions. The comparative results indicate that the DLSRM has higher average torque and much lower torque ripple compared to the SLSRM.
