Voltage Sag Mitigation Using Distributed Generation For An Industrial Distribution System

Nowadays a very handful of options are available as far as using renewable energy resources in day to day life is concerned. The application of these distributed generations (DGs) in many sectors (i.e. industrial, commercial, agricultural etc.) is still a matter of concern due to various planning related issues like optimal placement, sizing and improper selection of technology. In an industrial sector combination of conventional power resources along with renewable energy resources can compensate the production losses due to various power quality related issues (mainly voltage swell, voltage sag, interruptions and etc.) and can also mitigate some global environmental issues, by reducing the carbon footprint. The latter being one of the prime concern of today’s power system researchers. The prime objective of this work is to optimally integrate DG in the distribution network for the mitigation of power quality issues (mainly voltage sag). This paper uses particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique to determine the sizing and optimum location for DG integration in an underground industrial distribution network for enhancing the voltage levels so as to reduce the voltage sag at the buses where industrial loads were connected. A mathematical modeling of DG is proposed for voltage sag mitigation. The detailed results are presented considering an industrial distribution system to ensure the validity of the proposed method. Both symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults were taken into consideration for analysis of voltage sag. The findings of this paper is foremost important for the industrial sector so as to immune their system from poor power quality issues.
