Multi-Microgrid Architecture: Optimal Operation and Control

The integration of distributed energy resources (DER) into the distribution system can be implemented either on an individual resource level or on an organized unit level, such as the microgrids. The latter provides the advantage of hierarchical control of the distribution system. Future distribution system architectures, known as ”multi-microgrid architectures” are based on a centralized higher-level controller and distributed microgrid controllers to technically operate the future distribution system. In this paper, we propose a microgrid controller which ensures not only the optimal and secure operation of one microgrid unit in interconnected mode but also controls the active and reactive power exchanged with the grid. The controller is based on a full-AC optimal and secure power flow which is solved using an Interior Point based method described in this paper.
