Energy Storages as Synthetic Inertia Source in Power Systems

In the European power systems, the generation sector is undergoing a dramatic change. More and more large conventional generation sources are replaced by low power renewable energy sources. This disadvantageously affects the operating conditions of these power systems during disturbances. The dynamics and range of frequency changes increases when the loss of active power occurs. This drives the search for new measures that will increase the possibilities of frequency stabilization. Synthetic inertia sources are one of such measures. They can be energy storages. This will increase their importance in future power systems. However, the possibilities of using energy storages as sources of synthetic inertia depend on the technology used. This paper presents the results of analyzes which assess the most important technical aspects of the use of various energy storages as synthetic inertia sources. The usefulness of this solution is indicated by the conclusions of analogous analyzes for wind sources - selected results of simulation investigations are presented in the paper.
