Study of An Axial-Flux Modulated Superconducting Magnetic Gear

An axial-flux modulated superconducting magnetic gear (AFMSMG) is specifically studied using superconducting bulk magnets (SBM) instead of permanent magnets. A mathematical modelling of the SBM as the magnetic field source is built from the point of the physical superconducting mechanism. After that, an analytical model for AFMSMG based on equivalent magnetic circuit and theory of axial flux modulated magnetic gear is proposed to predict the air-gap magnetic density and the transferred torque, taking nonlinear effects of the magnetic materials into consideration. Finally, a three-dimension (3D) model of the proposed superconducting magnetic model is designed and analyzed via finite element method. The calculation results by the proposed analytical model are verified with those issued from the finite element method. Besides, efficiency of superconducting eddy current couple is analyzed theoretically.
