Grounded Controllable Network Transformer for Cost-Effective Grid Control

This paper proposes a new cost-effective power router technology called Grounded Controllable Network Transformer (G-CNT) for dynamic, granular, and decoupled power flow control. The proposed technology pairs a fractionally-rated converter with a conventional transformer to offer a grid control solution at a lower cost-point and with higher reliability compared to existing approaches such as flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS). The technology has been successfully demonstrated at the distribution feeder level, 3-phase 12.47 kV, and lends itself to applications at the subtransmission and transmission levels. Basic concepts and key technological aspects, along with simulation and experimental results are presented for a 12.47 kV, 3-phase 1 MVA prototype unit.
