Experimental Validation of Phase-Attached Radar/Communication (PARC) Waveforms: Radar Performance

A new type of tunable phase-attached radar/communication (PARC) waveform is tested. The tested PARC waveforms are constructed using the polyphase-coded FM (PCFM) waveform generation framework, the implementation of which is derived from continuous phase modulation (CPM). These waveforms are tested for the first time using a simple radar constructed from a low-cost commercial software-defined radio. The waveform design, experiment setup, and some initial results are shown using targets-of-opportunity (cars). The experimental results demonstrate the impact of the added communication functionality on clutter across range-Doppler, and hence target detection performance.
