Tunable Target Design for a Dielectric-Waveguide-based Radar Target Generator

A tunable target design for a low cost radar target generator (RTG) is presented in this paper. Based on a dielectric waveguide, the RTG is applicable for tank level probing radars. Yet, the applied targets must be suitable to generate various reflection behaviours, depending on the supervised real scenario. Therefore, four different targets are discussed, six fabricated, and all are compared in detail. Apart from extensive 3D electromagnetic simulations, measurements with an 80 GHz FMCW radar prove the suitability of these targets. Depending on the chosen geometry, different reflection behaviours can be obtained.
