Real-time AQI Monitoring System: An Economical Approach Using Wireless Sensor Network

Measuring air pollution levels of an area in a cost-effective manner with good accuracy has been a challenge. Conventional methods of calculating the air quality of an area involve setting up sensors at a single place. This paper presents a way of calculating the same by deploying a cost effective wireless sensor network where each node of the network will measure the corresponding air quality and this data in turn will be used to calculate an accurate air quality level of the main hub. Sensors are interfaced with Arduino UNO at the nodes to compute pollutant data. This data is relayed to the central hub using module nRF24l01+ which relies on RF communication. Wemos D1R1 at the central hub performs appropriate calculations and pushes the data to cloud. Firebase (a real-time database) is used to store the real-time data which is in turn relayed to a custom-made Android application. This allows effortless access of realistic data on a large number of devices.
