Strategies for Adopting CSG-Ed In CS 1

This paper advocates incorporating Computing for Social Good into the computing curriculum using an approach designed to send the message to students that they, as computer scientists, can make important socially relevant contributions to our communities and world. We argue that while this messaging is important throughout the curriculum, it is especially important in the introductory course. There is also evidence that these types of efforts can be a significant contributor to efforts to broaden participation in computing by women and other underrepresented minorities. Furthermore, we believe that faculty do not need any special expertise to incorporate social awareness and activism in their courses.
