Multi-area generation expansion planning model of high variable generation penetration

Generation expansion planning is the essential premise for the safe and sustainable development of power system, especially at a high variable generation (VG) penetration scenario. An accurate and efficient generation expansion planning model can be of great help to policy decision. In most existing generation expansion model, the capacity of VG such as wind power and solar power are treated as preset boundaries instead of decision variables, which may lead to over construction of flexible resources and energy storage, or even excessive VG curtailment. Moreover, the transmission among areas should be properly modelled to better accommodate VG in multiple areas. This paper presented a multi-area co-optimize generation expansion planning model of variable generation and conventional generation. In the proposed model, VG is considered as decision variable and their uncertain nature is reflected in capacity value (CV). Transmissions among areas and its impact on VG accommodation are also taken into account and analyzed.
