Topology alteration for output power maximization in PV arrays under partial shading

Partial shading is the major cause of mismatch losses in modules of PV arrays mainly when the roof-top systems are considered. The partial shading in PV arrays can be due to the shadow of nearby buildings, dust, cloud coverage and soiling. As, a result, the output from the PV arrays gets reduced and sometimes results in the formation of the hotspot. In this paper, the interconnection topology of the PV modules is altered to study its impact on the partial shading. The three widely used interconnection topologies i.e. Series-Parallel (SP), Bridge-Linked (BL), Honey Comb (HC) and Total Tied Cross (TCT) for a 4×4 PV array are taken into account. Various easy-to-predict moving shading patterns are considered to study the power output from different topologies. The best interconnection topology that can maximize power output for each shading pattern is investigated.
