Main and auxiliary parts of battery storage, aimed to fast charging of electrical vehicles

Limited driving cycle and protracted charging process are the main concerns of battery storage in electrical vehicles (EVs). In addition to promoting battery technologies, these defects could be moderated using suitable battery management systems (BMSs). To tackle the problems, an isolated bidirectional Cuk converter with a battery storage including two types of batteries as a BMS is proposed. An expensive battery like lithium-ion is considered as the main battery, while a cheaper type such as lead-acid is employed as the auxiliary one. Although the main battery should be charged and discharged in lenient condition, the auxiliary battery can be charged and discharged in harsh condition. So, the auxiliary battery can be charged quickly in charge stations and discharged swiftly during acceleration of the EV. Moreover, it can be used for an exchangeable battery strategy aimed to reduce congestion at charging stations. The utilized Cuk converter as a suitable interface between the batteries manages power sharing of the system in different scenarios. The basic operation of the proposed topology and the relevant control strategies are explained in details. The proposed topology is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink software and some results are presented to show the performance of the system in different conditions.
