Wind power generation with modified trapezoidal modulation converter for DC connected offshore wind farms

Offshore wind farms are growing as a renewable generation system. For long distance power transmission from offshore to mainland, a high voltage direct current (HVDC) system is cost-effective. This paper shows a new modulation technique for the voltage source converter (VSC) of a HVDC output offshore wind farm. It is called a modified trapezoidal modulation (MTM). This technique can greatly reduce the power loss and the cost of the VSC. Additionally, the VSC can be stably controlled in pulse amplitude modulation mode while keeping the maximum power point tracking control when the proposed MTM is applied at the constant modulation factor to minimize the loss.
