Mechatronic sound intensity 2D probe

The paper addresses the problem of measurement of an acoustic intensity vector in the acoustic field using a singlechannel mechatronic measurement system. However, in any case, the new probe is not capable of replacing the traditional p-p noise probe, though in many cases it is a cost-effective solution with acceptable metrological quality. The way of working of the proposed mechatronic probe bases on p-p probe principle, where parallel data acquisition by multiple precisely matched pressure measurement channels are substituted by a series of acquisitions by the same microphone channel with successive precise replacement of the sensor. Depending on that, if the sound intensity vector measurement is made in one, two or three dimensions, one or two stepper motors are used to position the microphone in the space around the measurement point. In the paper the idea of construction and preliminary test results of the new probe used as a direct sound and first reflection directivity sensor are presented. The experiments show, that presented kind of probe can be a cost-effective tool for electroacoustic systems designers and room acoustics consultants. Obtaining better metrological properties needs some improvements in microphone directional phase characteristic.
