Meter Placement for Conservation Voltage Reduction in Distribution Systems

Requirements for real-time monitoring in distribution system for an advanced volt-var control, i.e., conservation voltage reduction (CVR), are first investigated in this paper. Then, a meter placement problem is defined to determine the real-time monitoring needed for CVR. Sensitivity analyses are used to determine the set of the rules for initial measurement options on distribution feeders. Based on these rules, three meter placement schemes are proposed for different metering options. The proposed schemes have two steps. First step uses a set of rules to determine an initial set of measurements. Then, the quality of voltage estimation will be assessed to remove least significant measurement or add a new measurement point. The performance of these three methods has been assessed by using a prototype IEEE distribution feeder.
