Solid State Transformer (SST) interfaced Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) wind turbine

the today energy crisis and the troubles related to the environment have resulted in a rapid development of renewable energy such as wind and solar energy. Integrating renewable energy into power grid and delivering the energy to the consumers efficiently is an excellent option for distributed energy production. The Solid State Transformer (SST) is an essential component in the enabling technology leading to modernization of the power distribution system. It uses the AC/DC stage to change the input ac voltage to a high frequency signal, achieving galvanic isolation with a high frequency transformer, and then uses DC/AC stage to generate required voltages form the resulting signals. In this paper the application of SST connected to a wind turbine based Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG), instead of regular transformer, is investigated. A system case study with a 1.5 MW DFIG wind turbine is conducted to show the advantages of SST based technique over conventional like: providing dc links, reactive power compensation, active power transfer, and voltage regulation.
