Adaptive flow routing model in SDN

In this paper, we propose the model of adaptive routing of heterogeneous traffic with respect to the current requirements regarding quality of service provisioning. The main idea is to develop the model for effective routing with high degree of flexibility that is achieved using a set of weighting coefficients which all together constitute the general routing metric. Based on this metric the routing system tries to achieve the best possible performance characteristics for every class of IP traffic. In reality, software-defined networks are the first in line where such dynamic routing is to be implemented. The core of such network is a managing device - software controller that is responsible for managing the structure of the network. In such case, this device is able to select optimal weighting coefficients for the generalized routing metric. In this paper, we present the diagram of the developed algorithm along with the description of its main steps. We also verify the proposed solution comparing it to the existing routing algorithms such as OSPF and EIGRP using the developed simulation tool.
