Augmented car: A low-cost augmented reality RC car using the capabilities of a smartphone

This paper describes the architectural design both for software and hardware that led to the construction of an innovative project that bridges smartphone capabilities with augmented reality remote controlled (RC) cars, called Augmented-Car. The Augmented Car uses a smartphone Android application to make it controllable through on-line software services. The resulting platform is operated by a software interface, while the operating car is not virtual, it is a real remote controlled vehicle incorporating a mobile device. The proposed architectural design is highly extendable in adopting other devices, while the augmented car platform can be used in a number of applications.
