Performance validation of a high-speed permanent-magnet motor for centrifugal compressors

The design and experimental validation of a high-speed permanent magnet motor is presented in this paper. It is well known the dependency of the motor parameters on the temperature, frequency and saturation of the magnetic circuit. A new test procedure is implemented to calculate the values of the motor parameters at the operating speed and temperature. The total losses are obtained from the heat removed by the coolant by calculating the change on enthalpy of the gas between the inlet and outlet in the cooling circuit. Since the losses cannot be segregated from test data, finite element simulations are used to estimate the components of the motor losses. The mechanical losses are estimated by comparing the total losses obtained from testing with the electromagnetic losses calculated from finite elements analysis.
