Design of UWB antennas for breast cancer detection

Design of UWB antennas for breast cancer detection is described. Confocal imaging by a monopole slot antenna array with 4 × 4 matrix is demonstrated for radar-based breast cancer detection system. Two separate tumor phantoms with the spacing of 10 mm are resolved by use of measured data. A differential bow-tie antenna with high impedance surface (HIS) is designed to improve the directivity and the gain. The directivity is improved by -6 dB at 15 GHz and the bandwidth of 9 GHz is obtained in the frequency range between 8 and 17 GHz.
