A study on the application of functional safety for PMS of electric propulsion ships

In this paper, we deal with the applicability of functional safety for PMS of electric propulsion ships. Since electric propulsion ship system is generally more complex than mechanical propulsion system, system Assurance (SA) and functional safety are critically required for this system. According to the Standard IEC 61508, this paper presents a case study concerning the evaluation of both the risk graph and the probability of failure per hours (PFH) for the PMS of electric propulsion ships.
