Microstructure and Magnetic Properties of FePt–Cr2O3 Films

We have studied the microstructures and magnetic properties of FePt with various metal oxides, to achieve an ideal media structure on glass substrates for thermally assisted magnetic recording. Unlike FePt–C granular films, FePt–M
_x
O
_y
(M = Ti, Nb, W, Zr, and Al) granular films showed an interconnected in-plane microstructure and low coercivity. However, the usage of Cr
₂
O
₃
as a segregant leads to very fine columnar granular structure, while there is still room for improvement in coercivity.
