THE LIGHTNING-STROKE generator has made possible the investigation of lightning-stroke phenomena in the laboratory.

This paper deals with the fundamental aspect of the problem, particularly with the characteristics of the lightning-stroke channel. The data and findings here presented reveal further the nature of the channel core and of the resulting column.

Field observations are also indicated for comparison, to enhance the value of the laboratory investigation.
