Development of a neutron-sensitive anger camera for neutron scattering instruments

State-of-the-art neutron-sensitive Anger camera systems have been produced to meet the experimental challenges of scientists in geology and biology and other fields for experiments at the Spallation Neutron Source facility(SNS). Rate capability for each neutron Anger camera module in a system will exceed 25,000 neutron detections per second, with detection efficiency at 50 percent for 0.05 eV neutrons. Spatial resolution is at present 1mm over 152mm
²
FOV, for each module. Two of the instruments, TOPAZ and MANDI have space for 48 modules. The high spatial resolution in conjunction with the higher rate real time signal processing will now serve as the enabling factor to resolve crystalline structure with unit cells around 60 atoms, and crystalline proteins to 1,000,000 atoms. Key technical aspects of this new type of Anger camera system will be presented, in addition key innovations in hardware and image processing, which may be applicable to similar systems.
