Evaluation of the use of secondary energy for hydrogen generation

This paper discusses about the production of H
₂
through water electrolysis and its usage as an energy vector. Aspects of the H
₂
production by generation plants including a mathematical model with practical and simulated results are presented. This model allows a more accurate prediction of the advanced alkaline electrolyzers behavior used in most applications. Two case studies are presented for estimation of the availability, cost of the secondary energy, cost of the grid energy, cost to establish and operate an H
₂
generating plant using alkaline water electrolysis and a feasibility study based on the economic aspects of the secondary energy from the Itaipu hydroelectric power plant and the non ensured energy from CEMIG electric power utility.
