Computational design study for an accelerator dipole in the range of 15-20 T

A superconducting accelerator dipole design based on the use of tape conductors in the high field region would open possibilities to reach magnetic flux densities in the range of 15-20 T. The unconventional geometry of the designed magnet avoids many problems encountered in the presently much used dipole cross-section of intersecting ellipses. The use of thin tape conductor is made possible by carefully optimizing the cross-sectional geometry of the coils. A design study of a 15 T magnet is presented and the required conductor characteristics to realize this concept are discussed.
