On a novel self-sensing actuator

The magnetically controlled shape memory alloy is a new type of shape memory alloy, which alters its magnetization and the surrounding magnetic field when the material is subjected to mechanical straining. With the characteristics, a novel self-sensing actuator scheme was proposed. Based on the analysis of the operation principle, the magnetic circuit modeling was established, and the relationship between induced voltage and speed was studied. The self-sensing actuator prototype and the experimental results were given. The results demonstrate that the induced voltage value reaches 46 V when the MSMA material is mechanically compressed. Relating to the geometrical and material parameters of the MSMA actuator, the induced voltage is proportional to the speed. The research provides the theoretic and experimental basis for the application of MSMA in intelligent systems.
