Advanced features of very large superconducting magnets for SSC and LHC detectors

Large superconducting magnets are under study for physics detectors at the future colliders, SSC in the US and LHC in Europe. These include both solenoids and toroids in a wide range of characteristics. A comparison of the various designs is presented, with special emphasis on the basic concepts and on their relevance to critical issues such as stability, safety and practical feasibility.<
