The Effects of Underlayers for SmCo$_5$Thin Films With Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy

Ru was used for the seed and interlayer for SmCo
₅
layer and its effects on the structure and magnetic properties of SmCo
₅
film were studied. It was found that the Ru seed layer can decrease the surface roughness and reduce the grain size of Cu underlayer. The Ru interlayer promotes perpendicular orientation of c axis in the SmCo
₅
crystallite and results in the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy
