Noise Leakage Shaping Technique with Auxiliary Digital Noise Coupling in CT MASH DSM

This paper presents a continuous-time (CT) multi-stage noise shaping (MASH) delta -sigma modulator (DSM) with noise leakage shaping for high resolution applications. By an auxiliary digital noise coupling loop, the quantization noise leakage is significantly alleviated in the proposed CT MASH architecture. Therefore, this technique reduces requirements of operational amplifiers without trading the resolution loss. Furthermore, this technique allows using intrinsically linear single-bit quantizer in the first stage and high resolution multi-bit quantizer in the later stages, thus the proposed CT MASH enjoys benefits provided by multi-bit quantization and avoids using any complex DAC linearization technique. Mathematical analysis and further simulation results are provided to prove the effectiveness of the proposed architecture and its high potential for high resolution applications.
