A simple model for a dye-based solid state random laser

The wide variety of materials and experimental setups used in solid-state random lasers (SSRLs) makes it difficult to understand the spectro-temporal dynamical complexities exhibited by these devices with a single operational theoretical model. This contribution presents a comparison between a simple theoretical model and the experimental spectro-temporal characteristics of a dye-based solid state random laser (SSRL) operating in the diffusive regime under ultrafast pumping. The random laser is based on a ground powder of a rhodamine B-doped hybrid compound incorporated into a diureasil host. The precise analysis of the time-resolved emission of the SSRL was carried out by developing an experimental method based on ultrafast detection which may include spatial filtering that allows us to study the dynamics and structure of the individual RL spikes. A model based on an exponential probability distribution of photon path lengths in an amplifying medium is proposed. The spectro-temporal evolution and the energetic behavior of the SSRL emission predicted by the model accord well with the different time windows used in the experimental measurements.
