Pilot Overhead Reduction for Antenna Ports in MIMO OFDM Systems Using High-Resolution Map

The pilot overhead reduction is an important issue in recent years in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing sys-tems (OFDM). The conventional pilot-aided channel estimation (PACE) requires emission of pilot signals from all antenna ports. Thus, the number of available data resources decreases linearly with the growth of the number of antenna ports which leads to system's performance degradation. This problem can be solved by the usage of so-called high-resolution map, which contain information about scattering environment and some preliminary obtained channel measurements. In this paper we propose algorithms for channel extrapolation in spatial domain that use prior information from high-resolution map to reduce the number of pilots emitted from antenna ports.
