Signal Processing Innovations at the National Severe Storms Laboratory: Improving the Quality and Timeliness of Data from Operational and Next-Generation Weather Radars

Accurate and timely weather radar data play a key role in advancing atmospheric research and improving severe and high-impact weather warnings and forecasts. The National Severe Storms Laboratory, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations at the University of Oklahoma, stands at the forefront of atmospheric research, with a rich history of contributions to the development of cutting-edge radar technologies. This paper presents examples of recent innovations in signal processing aimed at improving the quality and timing of current and future radar data in support of the mission of the National Weather Service.
