A Bibliometric Analysis on the Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Petroleum Engineering

Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to make transformative strides across various sectors, its applications in Petroleum Engineering have garnered increasing attention for tasks such as reservoir management, drilling optimization, and predictive maintenance. However, a comprehensive understanding of the existing body of research at the intersection of AI and Petroleum Engineering remains largely unexplored. This paper presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis aimed at identifying and mapping the current status of AI and petroleum engineering research from 2014 to August 2023, while also highlighting its possible future paths. A total of 474 documents were sourced from Scopus database and analyzed using state-of-the-art bibliometric tools using "VOSviewer". The analysis includes most active countries, prolific journals, keyword co-occurrence, and emerging research areas associated with the AI and petroleum engineering. The analysis highlights the progression of research interest over time and identifies the pivotal topics that have shaped discussions within the field. Furthermore, this study provides insights into potential future directions of the AI and petroleum engineering, enabling researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders to anticipate and contribute to the ongoing development of the energy sector. Through this bibliometric exploration, the paper not only offers a consolidated overview of existing knowledge but also serves as valuable insights for those seeking to navigate the this multidisciplinary research area.
