Simulation-Based Evaluation of IDMT Characteristics for Overcurrent Relay Protection

In the realm of power system protection, the identified problem of reliable protection scheme underscores a crucial void in the design and execution of Inverse Definite Minimum Time (IDMT) overcurrent protection mechanisms. This paper highlights a critical gap in the design and implementation of IDMT overcurrent protection within power systems. Despite advancements in power system protection research and education, there is a lack of a systematic approach to designing and implementing numerical IDMT overcurrent relay characteristics. The absence of standardized methodologies and tools poses challenges to the reliability and effectiveness of protection schemes. The research aims to address this gap by developing and validating IDMT overcurrent relay characteristics following IEC 60255 standards. The objectives include creating a systematic methodology, simulating the designed characteristics using MATLAB/Simulink, and evaluating the performance in terms of speed, selectivity, and reliability. The software implementation involves a detailed Simulink model of an electrical system with an IDMT protection mechanism. The research emphasizes the need for a robust methodology to enhance the understanding and optimization of IDMT overcurrent protection in electrical power systems.
