Performance Evaluation of Prototype Filter-based FBMC/OQAM System for Wireless Communications

The FBMC/OQAM system, a new variant of multi-carrier modulation technology, demonstrates higher spectral efficiency and superior anti-multipath interference capabilities in high-noise environments, as compared to its predecessor, the OFDM system. As such, it is garnering interest as a potentially promising technology for 5G mobile communication systems. Bit Error Rate (BER) serves as a crucial index for evaluating the quality of the FBMC/OQAM communication system. It is influenced by various factors including the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), channel conditions, modulation methods, and coding schemes. A study into BER can facilitate a deeper understanding of the system's performance, aiding in the selection of suitable modulation modes and error correction coding schemes for practical applications, thereby improving the system's reliability and stability. Moreover, examining BER can shed light on the strengths and weaknesses of the FBMC/OQAM system, guiding optimization of its design and performance. This paper commences with the design of a prototype filter for the FBMC/OQAM system, proceeds to analyze the system and its BER expression, sets up a simulation model, and ultimately contrasts it with the OFDM system. The insights gleaned from this research are expected to propel the wider adoption and application of FBMC/OQAM as an effective modulation technology in future wireless communication systems.
