A Systematic Design Method for a Coaxial Magnetic Gear

This paper presented a systematic method for designing a coaxial magnetic gear. The paper is intended for use by designers wanting to quickly develop a high torque density magnetic gear for a particular rated torque value. As many of the magnetic gear geometric design parameters are not independent of each other this paper shows that by analytically stepping through each geometric design decision a competitively designed high torque density magnetic gear can be determined without the need for completing a time consuming large geometric numerical parameter sweep analysis or use complicated modelling optimization routines. It is shown that the number of unknowns needed to evaluate a magnetic gear's rated torque can be reasonably reduced to the determination of the modulator radial length, the rotor radius ratios, and the axial length. The presented method relies on and is verified using 2-D and 3-D finite element analysis.
