Bidirectional Charging as a Contribution to the Energy and Mobility Transitions: a Methodology for Modelling

Electric vehicles will play a critical role in achieving environmental objectives in the transportation sector. At the same time the charging demand resulting will have a large impact on the energy system. Thus, it is critical to accurately model the impact of charging demand on the electricity grid. Furthermore, the implications of diverse and innovative charging strategies and in particular charging and discharging of electric vehicles (bidirectional charging) is essential.For the first time, we present a detailed and comprehensive methodology to model bidirectional charging of electric vehicles. We do this using a detailed charging model and a complex energy system model. This contribution is essential to understand the impact of bidirectional charging and evaluate numerous real-world scenarios now and in the future.
