Development of the Smart Home System for Elder Healthcare Based on IoT Technology

As the global population ages, there is a growing need for innovative solutions to support the elderly in maintaining independent and healthy lifestyles. Smart home systems are promising for addressing the challenges associated with elderly care as they offer a range of monitoring and assistance functionalities. We researched the development and implementation of a smart home system tailored specifically for elderly care, leveraging a combination of sensor technologies and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity. Traditionally, taking care of the elderly relies on periodic check-ins or institutionalized care settings, which may not adequately address the diverse needs and preferences of aging individuals. Smart home systems offer a more personalized and non-intrusive approach to care, allowing elderly individuals to maintain their independence while ensuring their safety and well-being. The smart home system is equipped with a range of sensors, including the MQ135 gas sensor for air quality monitoring, the SHTC3 temperature and humidity sensor for environmental monitoring, and a microphone for sound detection. The ESP32 microcontroller serves as the central processing unit, enabling data collection, and analysis, and sends out the data and information to caregivers or family members via WiFi connectivity. By investigating the potential of smart home systems for elderly care, the research results contribute to technology-enabled healthcare. The findings help to design and develop future smart home systems to improve the quality of life of the elderly and their caregivers.
