A Sub-6 GHz and MMW Dual-Band Aperture-Sharing Antenna by Reusing Mushroom-Typed Structure

A broadband aperture-sharing antenna working in microwave (MW) and millimeter wave (MMW) bands is introduced in this paper, based on the reuse of parasitic mushroom-typed structures. For the MMW frequency band, two mushroom-typed structures are combined to build a MMW antenna element, forming two sets of 1 × 4 MMW arrays. The MMW array can realize beam scanning angle of -40° to +40°. In MW band, the MMW arrays are reused as bandwidth widening structure, and the bandwidth of MW antenna is increased from 7.6% to 17%. The high space utilization of the proposed design makes the dual-band antenna suitable for the fifth-generation (5G) mobile terminal applications.
