Analysis of Magnetic Field Modulation Mechanism in Transverse Flux Cylindrical Linear Generator Used in Direct Drive Wave Energy Conversion

Extracting wave energy for power generation is a decent way to meet sea area power supply demands. Among various power take-off devices, direct-drive wave energy converter (DDWEC) is more efficient in wave energy conversion. However, it still has demerits of low speed and low generator power density. Magnetic field modulation is a feasible method to increase speed and enhance power density. In this paper, a transverse flux cylindrical magnetic field modulated linear generator is proposed. The magnetic field modulation mechanism of this topology is elaborated. Different combinations of stator slots and translator poles are compared. The 12/11 topology proves to have a relatively low detent force (0.94N), thrust ripple (0.76%) and a high average thrust (247.01N).
