Investigation of Dual-Side Consequent-Pole Permanent Magnet Machine with Improved Magnetic Field Modulation Effect

In order to further improve the torque density and power factor of permanent magnet (PM) machines with magnetic gear effect, a dual-side consequent-pole PM machine (DCPMM) is proposed in this paper. Both stator and rotor are incorporated with a consequent-pole PM arrangement. The ferromagnetic poles of the rotor and stator are utilized to modulate the magnetic field excited by stator-PM and rotor-PM, namely, the bidirectional modulation effect. The topology, operation principle, and design considerations of the proposed DCPMM are analyzed. Then, the electromagnetic performances of the proposed machine with different excitation methods are evaluated and compared by finite-element analysis. The employment of dual-side PM excitation is beneficial to enhance air-gap flux densities and torque production capability. The results demonstrate that the proposed machine can produce superior torque production with low torque ripple, great overload capability, and a high power factor.
