Aging Assessment Methods Based on Dyed Area Extraction for Composite Insulator Cores

The aging phenomenon of insulating materials is very easy to lead to line failure, affecting the stable operation of the power system, and even causing huge economic losses, so the research on the aging degree of insulating materials is becoming more and more important. In this paper, after profiling an abnormally hot composite insulator and carrying out a dye penetration test on the aging epoxy resin core, the dyed portion of the core image was extracted by the dyed area extraction method based on the binary method and the RGB trichromatic method, and it was found that the results obtained were consistent with the dyed of the core after the penetration test. It shows that the two dyed area extraction methods have certain accuracy and can achieve the effect of quantitatively describing the aging degree at different locations of the core. It is speculated that the electric field stress point of the high-voltage side of the composite insulator is the starting point of the aging of the core.
