A Comparative Performance Study of High-Speed SynRM and PMa-SynRM Rare-Earth and Rare-Earth-Less Permanent Magnets for Automotive Traction

This paper addresses a comparative analysis of high-speed Synchronous Reluctance Machines (SynRM) and Synchronous Reluctance Machines Assisted by Permanent Magnets (PMa-SynRM) of Ferrite and NdFeB magnets for automotive traction applications. The coils of these motors are subjected to high current densities, and liquid cooling is incorporated into their housing. Initially, a brief introduction to SynRM with and without permanent magnets is discussed. Subsequently, the paper presents the curves of the magnetic materials, which were characterized by the authors and utilized in the simulations. These motors are assessed through numerical simulations with a base speed of 6000 rpm and a maximum speed of 12000 rpm. At the end, electromagnetic results obtained through these simulations are presented, followed by their respective power and torque densities.
