A decision making Framework for the Selection of Business Process Modeling Languages

Business Process modeling aims at a better understanding of processes, allowing deciders to achieve strategic goals of the company. The increasing interest in business processes has resulted in the appearance of various Business Process Modelling Languages, each one having its own vocabulary, modeling paradigm and thus specific rules. Moreover, each BPML expresses certain aspects of processes (e.g. activities, roles, interactions, data, etc.) and addresses different application areas. We propose a decision making approach into a decision-making framework that employs a mathematical representation aiming to provide a systematic method for professionals in choosing the most appropriate BPML based on specific project requirements. It proposes a mathematical approach to assess BPMLs, concentrating on metrics like Capability, Diversity, and Flexibility. We applied our approach to evaluate twelve BPMLs. Through the mathematical representation and calculation of these metrics, our framework facilitates a detailed and objective comparison of BPMLs, enabling practitioners to make informed decisions that align with their specific business process modeling needs.
