Energy Efficiency in RIS-Assisted Wireless Networks: Impact of Phase Shift and Deployment

This paper presents an in-depth analysis and optimization of energy efficiency in wireless networks enhanced by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs). Our investigation centers around RIS-assisted communication systems, particularly in scenarios lacking a direct link. Utilizing stochastic geometry as our analytical tool, we delve into the dynamics of coverage probability, which serves as a foundation for deriving insights into spectrum efficiency and, ultimately, energy efficiency. A novel aspect of our research is the examination of how the accuracy of the phase shift matrix in RIS impacts energy efficiency. We offer strategies for adjusting this matrix to optimize energy usage. Furthermore, our study reveals a finding: adjusting the number of RISs, while maintaining constant total power consumption, can help get maximum energy efficiency. This work not only advances the theoretical understanding of RIS in wireless networks but also provides practical guidelines for their efficient implementation, marking a contribution to the development of energy-efficient wireless communication technologies.
