Techno-economic Feasibility Analysis of Floating Photovoltaic Installation: A Singapore Case Study

With the surging global energy demand, it is crucial to develop sustainable alternatives to traditional energy sources. Solar energy, particularly solar photovoltaic (PV), is a cost-effective solution advocated in many countries like Singapore with ample solar irradiance. Due to limited land resources, floating PV (FPV) systems have become popular in Singapore. This paper analyzes the techno-economic feasibility of the FPV installation in Singapore, mainly focusing on location selection, technical designs, and cost economics. Based on the simulation results and analysis, the Tengeh Reservoir is determined to be a suitable location due to its proximity to residential loads and cost-effectiveness. After examining various FPV system designs and technologies, this paper suggests the installation of Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact (PERC) solar panels with wipers to enhance the energy efficiency of FPV systems.
