Torque Ripple Reduction of SynRM Using Rotor Structure Modification

The automobile industry is shifting toward electric vehicles (EVs), albeit not everyone can afford them. The motor, which is one of the essential components of an EV along with the battery, is currently mostly dependent on permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), which raises the cost of EVs because permanent magnets are expensive. These days, synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs) are an excellent alternative to PMSMs because of their great efficiency and lack of permanent magnets. However, a significant issue with SynRM is the high torque ripple. Reducing torque ripple can be achieved using suitable controls and structural modification. To reduce torque ripple, this article discusses the performance of two new SynRM rotor structures and proposes the best rotor structure for electric car applications. The torque ripple of SynRM models is analyzed using Ansys Electronics Desktop and compared with the conventional SynRM.
