Comparative Analysis and Design of Class-E Inductive and Capacitive Power Transfer Systems for Non-Mating Connectors

In this paper, a 13.56-MHz inductive power transfer (IPT) system and a 13.56-MHz capacitive power transfer (CPT) system are designed and compared for non-mating connector (NMC) applications. Circuits designs are based on a Class-E inverter to improve the performances with zero voltage switching (ZVS). Circuits are designed from the parameters of each coupler. Both systems performances are simulated and measured on fabricated prototypes: for 20 V input, the IPT system, outputting 43.3 W for 78.4 % of efficiency, outperformed the proposed CPT system, which outputs 12.3W for 65.8 % of efficiency.
